Toronto's Summer Storm

Wow! What a week!

If you were in Toronto or the GTA you no doubt got a bit wet. We were closed early on Monday when the power went out and went home wondering what the damage would be on Tuesday morning as information poured in through social media. Thankfully we were left with no damage but found ourselves closed early again on Tuesday with rolling black outs. A few of our friends stores along Queen St. West were flooded and even a few of our staff members faced some house flooding from the rain. While the damage, especially in retrospect of what’s happened in Calgary, was minimal, it reminded me of my trip with Liz to NYC in November for a Yaby workshop. We left nearly a week after Hurricane Sandy had hit and drove through so much devastation to get to New York City. So many makeup artists shared their stories of escape, being uprooted from their homes, and something only a fellow makeup artist can understand, the devastation of losing their makeup kit. We offered gift certificates to those who lost their kit and tried to find solutions in NYC. The amount of support we received was amazing.

It’s hard to convey the stress and upset of losing something like makeup to someone who works a ‘normal job.’ When you work for another company, when devastation hits, someone else cleans up the mess. A new computer is delivered to your desk. Staplers are replaced and somewhere in ‘finance’ the costs are figured out. This kind of loss for a freelancer, while not the end of the world, is instantly overwhelming. One day you’re packing up your kit, an essential part of your livelihood, and the next day, you’re draining your makeup cases, trying to find a salvageable brush, wondering how you’re going to earn a living without the tools you need to do your job. When the rain hit Monday night and Instagram was bombarded with pictures of the flooding, we knew people were going to lose their kits. And with the floods in Calgary so fresh in our minds, we wanted to help.

So we’re turning to our customers, our makeup artists, our friends, that understand this kind of loss. We’ll be accepting donations of new and unused makeup and new or gently used makeup brushes to put into the hands of makeup artists who have lost their kit. We’ll also be accepting cash donations that we’ll match dollar for dollar in Yaby product. If you are a makeup artist in Toronto or Calgary and have been affected by the summer floods, get in touch. Show us a picture of your damaged brushes, tools and makeup and we’ll help you get back on your feet for summer jobs!
